AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety™ (TSW)

An AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety has an influential role that engages and interacts with students (4 years – adults) leading skills and drills that provide knowledge, skill and understanding in water safety and swimming in pools and confined natural shallow water venues.
The AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water has both Vocational Education and Training requirements and non-accredited training requirements which have been designed and set by AUSTSWIM.
AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Accreditation is valid for three years.
Candidates in Australia:
Australian or NZ Citizen or hold an appropriate VISA allowing you to undertaking education. (AUSTSWIM is not a CRICOS provider and cannot enrol students on international student visa)
Must provide their valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) number at the time of enrolment in order that AUSTSWIM can verify this. A USI is a reference number required by the Commonwealth statutory office (Student Identifiers Act 2014) and is obtained from the USI Registrar.

Candidates in Australia and New Zealand:

You may enrol in an AUSTSWIM course at 16 years of age but are not eligible to receive the AUSTSWIM accreditation until they are 17 years of age.
You are required to have a reasonable level of fitness and swimming ability to perform the required aquatic skills.
You are required to have access to a computer and the internet to access the online modules outside of face to face training.
This interactive course is delivered in a blended format.
It requires attendance at a face to face training session over two full days. It also requires the completion of an online interactive component. Candidates are also required to complete supervised industry training in a swim teaching environment with a range of teaching conditions.
The course consists of theory and practical components:
1. Theory component - topics may be offered through classroom attendance or selected topics via
AUSTSWIM’s e-learning centre.
2. Practical component - involves swimming activities that may be carried out in shallow or deep water.
This interactive course is delivered in a blended format.
It requires attendance at a face to face training session over 2 full days. It also requires the completion of an online interactive component. Candidates are also required to complete supervised industry training in a swim teaching environment with a range of teaching conditions
Assessment of the candidate’s knowledge and skills is undertaken throughout all three delivery modes.

5. Principles of movement in water
6. Aquatic safety, survival and rescue skills
7. Water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility
8. Teaching safer diving skills

10. Legal responsibilities for the AUSTSWIM Teacher
Assessment relates to both the Vocational Education Training requirements and AUSTSWIM requirements.
Your competency of skill, knowledge and understanding in delivery of swimming and water safety will be assessed using the 10 subject areas of the course.
Assessment is conducted during the face to face sessions, via online modules and during the industry training component via written or verbal responses, practical demonstrations and observations.
To get your AUSTSWIM accreditation, the following additional requirements need to be submitted;
Complete the Teacher Declaration by agreeing to abide by the AUSTSWIM Code of Conduct.
Complete a brief online course evaluation
Provide evidence of holding a current cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) statement of attainment. For further information on CPR requirements please click here.
Submit an endorsed photo for AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence.
Vocational Educational Training:
The Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety course contains units of competency which are nationally recognised from the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training package. Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements, candidates will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following units:
SISCAQU008 Instruct water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills
SISCAQU009 Instruct water safety and survival skills
SISCAQU010 Instruct swimming strokes
SISCAQU002 Perform basic water rescues
On 10th of September the National Training Register has been updated whereby the unit SISCCRO302A – Apply legal and ethical instructional skills has been deleted from SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training Packages. AUSTSWIM has removed this unit from the Swimming and Water Safety (TSW) course with immediate effect as of 10th of September 2019.
Any candidate who has already commenced their course and successfully completes their course of study and achieve a competent result will be issued this unit of competency.
As the learning outcomes from this unit are important skills needed in the role of a swim teacher in terms of safety and child protection; AUSTSWIM will continue to deliver the material to not cause any detriment to the individual teacher or the level of skill of our teachers in industry. The duration and outcomes of this course will not change. Our commitment remains as always, to the best possible level of training, assessment and accreditation of aquatic education in Australasia.
