AUSTSWIM Teacher of Aquatics - Access and Inclusion (TAI)

The AUSTSWIM Teacher of Aquatics – Access and Inclusion course is designed to provide the knowledge and information required to deliver programs and services that meet the needs of a diverse range of people who use the aquatic environment.

Originally known as AUSTSWIM Teacher of Aquatics for People with a Disability, this course has been updated and extended to reflect the growing size and diversity of today’s communities. AUSTSWIM Teacher of Aquatics – Access and Inclusion adopts an educational approach and provides a positive directive to AUSTSWIM teachers of swimming and water safety to provide aquatics access and inclusion to all people regardless of:

  • disability

  • chronic condition

  • age

  • culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD).

    TAI Course Requirements

    Candidates in Australia  

    • Australian or NZ Citizen or hold an appropriate VISA allowing you to undertaking education. (AUSTSWIM is not a CRICOS provider and cannot enrol students on international student visa) 

    • Must provide their valid Unique Student Identifier (USI) number at the time of enrolment in order that AUSTSWIM can verify this. A USI is a reference number required by the Commonwealth statutory office (Student Identifiers Act 2014) and is obtained from the USI Registrar.

    Candidates in Australia and New Zealand 

    • Must provide a current Working With Children Check (WWCC). Although this is not expressly required before enrolling, it MUST be provided prior to commencing industry training (follow the link to find individual requirements for your State/Territory/Country ) Click here 

    All candidates: 

    • You may enrol in an AUSTSWIM course at 16 years of age but are not eligible to receive the AUSTSWIM accreditation until they are 17 years of age. 

    • have an AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Licence. 

    • You are required to have a reasonable level of fitness and swimming ability to perform the required aquatic skills.   

    • You are required to have access to a computer and the internet to access the online modules outside of face to face training.  

  • Delivery Strategy

    This interactive course is delivered in a blended format. 

    It requires attendance at a face to face training session over a full days It also requires the completion of an online interactive component. Candidates are also required to complete supervised industry training in a swim teaching environment with a range of teaching conditions. 

    The course consists of theory and practical components:

    1.  Theory component - topics may be offered through classroom attendance or selected topics via
    AUSTSWIM’s e-learning centre.

    2.  Practical component - involves swimming activities that may be carried out in shallow or deep water.


  • Content

    The course consists of approximately 8 contact hours (theory and practical), an online learning component, plus supervised on the job teaching hours. Topics include:

    1. A journey through aquatic participation

    2. Safety and legal issues

    3. Communication and perception

    4. Plan, deliver and review

    5. Skills for movement through the water


  • Assessment

    Your competency of skill, knowledge and understanding in delivery of swimming and water safety will be assessed using the 5 subject areas of the course listed above during the face to face, online and industry training components.

  • Additional Requirements

    To get your AUSTSWIM accreditation, the following additional requirements need to be submitted; 

    • Complete the Teacher Declaration by agreeing to abide by the AUSTSWIM Code of Conduct. 

    • Complete a brief online course evaluation 

    • Provide evidence of holding a current cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) statement of attainment. For further information on CPR requirements please click here

    • Submit an endorsed photo for AUSTSWIM Teacher Licence. 

    On successful completion of all course requirements candidates will receive the AUSTSWIM Teacher of Aquatics – Access and Inclusion Teacher Licence. 

    Note: when you complete an AUSTSWIM extension course your AUSTSWIM licence will automatically be renewed for a further 3 years from the date when the extension licence is issued. If you complete your AUSTSWIM course after the initial 12 months (or your AUSTSWIM Licence has previously expired) your licence may be subject to backdating. 

  • Vocational Education Training

    The Teacher of Aquatics – Access and Inclusion Teacher course contains units of competency which are nationally recognised from the Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training package. Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements, candidates will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following units:
